"The Bunker II: LOOKOUT"
Brooklyn, NY 2000
The Bunker II: LOOKOUT is a large sculpture in the form of a
cylindrical bunker that has been cleaved in two. It is covered in a
richly textured stucco, the color of hot earth or dried blood. The
path through the interior is painted in gold. The glowing path
entices and intimidates, narrowing to an almost impassable width at
its center.
On the walls of the path are empty frames, which might
once have held paintings, mirrors or windows.
These frames speak to
loss; LOOKOUT, with its twin references to war and home, addresses
the complexities of desire and violence inherent in the creation and
maintenance of identity.
