"The Witness"
Vaslui, Romania 1999
In the center of the installation is a spare, rectangular structure
made of mud and straw bricks, a traditional Romanian building
material. Inside the adobe "home" towers a stark, wooden chair.
Above the giant chair hangs a bare, bright lightbulb -- an icon of
interrogation. Ursachi's large color photographs hang on the museum
walls. There are no people visible in the scenes -- a path leading
into the woods, a lamp glowing behind a shuttered window, a view into
the depth of a well.
In one photo a sensual, pendulous sac, hangs
soft and pink in an inky sky -- home-made cheese being prepared.
